About Us
Auckland Schools Legal Mooting (ASLM) was founded in 2021 with the aim of introducing high school students in Auckland to mooting in an accurate and exciting way. Special tribute is paid to our 2021 team, whose particular dedication was critical in ensuring the success and growth of our organisation. Without the support and commitment of each of the following team members, ASLM would not be what it is today.

"Kia ora koutou, my name is Ryan, and I am the Managing Director of ASLM.
I am studying a LLB/BCom conjoint at the University of Auckland. ASLM holds a special place for me, having competed in the competition a few years ago. ASLM was my first real introduction to mooting and courtroom advocacy, and it provided me with an experience that many students only encounter later in their law degree.
I am grateful to be in a position to give back to this organisation and help provide a competition that sparks the interest of the next generation of legal scholars. I strongly believe that age should not be a barrier to developing an interest in the legal profession. There are many exceptional young students who can engage with complex legal problems early in their education, and mooting provides a unique opportunity to do exactly that.
I hope you enjoy the competition, both for the thinking it encourages and the friendships you will form along the way. I look forward to seeing you all mooting!"

"Howdy, I’m Richard and this year I am serving as the Competitions Manager for ASLM.
I have been interested in the law from a young age, and currently study at the University of Auckland. I am passionate about courtroom litigation and mooting, and it is my pleasure to contribute to bringing a taste of that to the junior audience. I believe strongly in boosting public engagement with the legal system, and ASLM provides a marvellous avenue of exposure for students to become acquainted with such. I am routinely amazed by the skills displayed by our competitors and inevitably dismayed to learn many intend to pursue other, more constructive professions, such as doctor, scientist, or professional foosball player. Nonetheless, it is my hope that all participants get some benefit and enjoyment from our competition. With luck, some may even learn a thing or two. Ka nui tena mo tenei wa, noho ora mai."

"Hi everyone! My name is Yeonsoo, and I am the ASLM Secretary this year.
I am currently a third-year law and arts (economics & politics) student at the University of Auckland.
In high school, I wasn’t involved in mooting, but last year I had the opportunity to compete in the Bell Gully Junior Mooting Competition. Although it was initially intimidating, I quickly grew to love both the preparation and the experience of competing alongside my moot partner.
Mooting offers a unique and rewarding way to engage with the law and gives you a sense of what it might be like to stand before a court and advocate for a client.
I’m excited to see high school students take part this year and discover that same sense of inspiration and growth. I wish you all the very best of luck!"

"Nau mai, haere mai! My name is Aston, and I am the Competitions Coordinator for ASLM.
I am currently studying an LLB/BCom conjoint at the University of Auckland. I was a competitor in ASLM competitions a short while ago. I still vividly remember my first moot: the slight panic looking at the stopwatch with 8 questions to go, the team scrum finalizing our closing arguments. Mooting remains one of the most memorable experiences in my school life.
I’m incredibly grateful to ASLM for the opportunities to learn legal thinking, argue realistic cases using legal elements, and experience courtroom advocacy. Now, I work to help the rest of the extremely talented ASLM team make your mooting experience even more enjoyable and rewarding than my own. See you at the rounds!

"Hi there! My name is Tim Prosee and I am the Treasurer.
I am in my sixth and final year at the University of Auckland. I am studying for a Bachelor of Law, specialising in commercial law, and a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in finance and information systems. As a former scout, I enjoy anything and everything outdoors, but am also a casual gamer.
While I intend on pursuing a career in the finance/technology field, I have found studying the law immensely satisfying; it has a way of providing an alternative lens through which you see the world and approach problems.
ASLM starts exposing students to this legal thinking, which I find invaluable, with the added benefit of giving students a 'taster' of what to expect from a legal career. As a student who had no experience of how the law worked prior to university, I would have cherished such an opportunity."

"Hello! My name is Chris Huang, general executive at ASLM.
I currently study a law and commerce conjoint at the University of Auckland. As a former competitor and, through luck, best mooter of this competition, it's my absolute privilege to give back. This organisation has a really special place in my heart. I had so much fun participating and could not regret more that I hadn't heard of ASLM earlier; I only got to compete once, in year 13. Irrespective of future plans in the legal sector, I believe competitors gain so much in the way of improving their soft skills.
I hope to bring the fun, joy, and learning experiences I had to all our bright, future mooters. I wish all competitors the very, very best, and may the odds be ever in your favour"
